Message from PTA President
I was born in a country that doesn’t exist anymore. In what seemed like an overnight development the Soviet Union fell apart when I was a teenager. So suddenly I was living in a brand new country with new goals and a different future. About a decade later I left that young but struggling country, Moldova, for a new homeland. Canada was a whole new universe. It was also the country that all my kids were born in. Then four years ago we packed again, got on an airplane and six hours later landed in yet another new country - the USA.
Does my story sound familiar to you? Have you lived through immigration? Have your parents or grandparents? We are a nation of immigrants and if you dig deep enough, every single one of you reading this will find roots in a different part of the world. You might say “So what? I’m here now!”. But a tree without roots will fall, just like a person without its past will never feel whole. It is up to us, the parents, to share with our kids who we are, where we came from, so they know who they are and understand themselves better.
Last year during Heritage Night we had booths from all over the world: Mexico, Brazil, Pakistan, Egypt, China, India, Australia, Portugal, Canada, Netherlands, Korea, Taiwan and many more. You can see pictures from last year HERE.
Everyone who came not only shared their culture, but got a chance to walk by other countries’ booths and learn about other cultures as well. Tasting the delicious authentic food brought by Fairlands families was my personal favorite of the event. Some booths had games for kids. Others had crafts. It was such a mix of cultures and countries in one place that it felt like… wait…it felt like the USA, land of the immigrants! We would love to see all of last year’s families back. We would love to see new families set up booths and share with the rest of us their heritage. We know Fairlands is home to families from Ireland, Ukraine, France, Russia, Singapore, and many more. Join us - you will love it!
I personally promise to bring sweets from Moldova and Canada because one is my birth country and the other is my kids’ birth country. So make sure you stop by our booth and while you munch on the sweets I will teach you how to say hello in Romanian, Russian and French!

PPIE Super Match Campaign
On Giving Tuesday Pleasanton Partners In Education (PPIE) launched their SUPER MATCH CAMPAIGN, which runs until Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 4). So, you can Super Match until the Super Bowl (get it :) ?!). WHY? PPIE has secured additional funds from the broader community to boost your own contributions, and make your dollars go farther! If every Pleasanton school family gives $100 or more, PPIE can raise $1 Million for the year and fund needed supplemental staff for our students: 2 extra hours/day for librarians & site tech specialists; intervention teachers & teacher’s aides; counselors & instructional coaches; and additional class sections in Middle and High School. WHY NOW? For your end of tax year and company matching plan considerations (check here see if your company matches). If you’ve already donated to PPIE, thank you - though our schools welcome more if you’re able. If you haven’t yet donated, this is your chance to help your student and our Pleasanton schools. DONATE NOW AT WWW.PPIE.ORG

An elementary school librarian thanks you and PPIE for your support: "I know the library is a well loved place by many students. The excitement I hear and see when the kids come into the library everyday is wonderful. I have students tell me daily that 'the library is my favorite place'! I am so thankful to PPIE for allowing us to keep the library open for longer hours each day. Thank you!” THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT TO PPIE - be sure to donate at WWW.PPIE.ORG  Happy Holidays!!
