HEALTH UPDATES
Flu season
The Pleasanton Unified School District has been notified of a high absence rate in
some classrooms.  District nurses have contacted the families of students who are ill,
and several have reported flu-like symptoms such as fever, cough and/or headache.
 It
is flu and cold season, and cases of flu have been clinically confirmed
.  Therefore, we
request families to strictly follow standard health procedures to reduce the spread of
colds or flu.  These include:

Do not come to school if you are sick.  No one should attend school until they have
had no fever for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medicine.  Any student who
is sick while at school will be sent home.
Practice basic infection control.  Wash hands frequently with soap and water (use
hand sanitizer if soap and water is not available).
Do not share personal items like drinks, food, or un-washed utensils.
Cover your coughs and sneezes with tissues.  If a tissue is unavailable, cover up
coughs or sneezes using the elbow, arm, or sleeve instead of the hand.
Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100
degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius, or greater) and may include any of the
following:  cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling
very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.
Talk with your health care provider if you have any questions or concerns.
Get vaccinated against seasonal flu.

If you do not have a health care provider, you may call the
Alameda County Public
Health Clearing House
at 1-888-604-4636. If you have any questions please do not
hesitate to call the
District Nurses at 925-462-5500 ext 4177.

    General reminder
It’s that time of year when we see an increase in colds and fevers.
During this cold and flu season, please review with your children the
importance of proper hand washing and germ control. Keep your child
home for 24 hours after a fever (100 degree or higher) without the aid
of Tylenol, and do not send a child to school who has vomited in the
morning or the night before. Please notify the school's attendance office
if your child has any contagious disease or lice. Thank you.

NEW LEGISLATION:  PERTUSSIS IMMUNIZATION

A new California law has changed the requirements about student immunization
against pertussis. For the next school year only, 2011/12,
students entering 7th
through 12th grade will need proof of a Tdap booster shot before starting school
.
This requirement can be met by receiving one dose of Tdap on or after the 10th birthday
and applies to all public and private schools (exemptions available for verified medical
conditions or personal beliefs). Beginning the following year (July 1, 2012 and beyond),
all students entering 7th grade will need proof of a Tdap booster before starting school.

Pertussis is widespread. If your child 10 years and older has not yet received the Tdap
pertussis booster shot, please contact your doctor or health department. Getting a
booster shot now will protect your child again the disease and will meet the new
requirement (Assembly Bill 354). Adults are also advised to get a booster shot.

The Alameda County Public Health Department has issued a letter containing
information about whooping cough (Pertussis), available in
English and Spanish.
SAFETY REMINDER
PUSD and the Pleasanton Police Department would like to remind families of some
basic safety guidelines to remember when driving to or from schools:

    1. Give yourself plenty of time in the morning.
    2. Obey the posted speed limit signs and directional signs.
    3. Obey the rules of the road.
    4. Be patient!
    5. If you are driving your children to school, have them ready to leave
the car, with all of their belongings, when you come to a stop at the
    school.
    6. Explore other alternatives such as carpool, ride-sharing, walking, or
    biking to school.
    7. Look and obey the school crossing guards.

Thank you for helping us ensure the safety of our students and families!
